We packed up our campervan and made sure we all had our waterproofs and off we went. We were heading to Hereford for the Young Persons Event. Jacqui came with her 2 kids, Gemma and Sean. I took Craig and Penny.
We arrived at the campsite in good time. It was called cuckoos corner. Great for kids! Penny helped to get the chickens in for the night, ride the tractor, feed the ponies and do some mucking out. We’re still waiting for the pay cheque! We had fun too doing archery and some rifle shooting.
The following morning we set off again for ‘The taste of adventure’ park. A few people had gathered there already but no where near the numbers that I was expecting. We had our pick of activities to try. The abseiling looked great so we all got kitted up.
Sean and Gemma were down first closely followed by Jacqui and Craig. They all had smiling faces so I thought I’d better show willing. Although this wasn’t my first time abseiling it was still very daunting leaning over the edge and trusting the ropes. It’s been a long time since I did it but you never forget, its like riding a bike. Except much higher up! Shortly after that the rain came down. We weren’t put off, we just wrapped up more. Like Craig says, ‘There’s no such thing as bad weather, just inadequate clothing!’ A few cups of hot tea soon warmed us up so off we went again.
Next up was the trampolines. Sounds easy? These were different! You are strapped into a harness which is then attached to bungy cords which you then use to bounce up and down. You can reach quite high as Sean proved! Twirling somersaults backwards and forwards was really good fun. The trampolines were soaking wet from all the rain. We just changed our socks! I’d had enough after about 5 minutes. My legs aren’t in quite as good condition as they used to be. Sean was on it for most of the afternoon. I don’t know how he did it!
The zip wire was good fun too. We sat astride a car tyre and were pushed along a wire until you landed with a bump at the end. Lots of people seemed to be enjoying this one.
The weather really did take a turn for the worst in the afternoon. We sat and chatted with a few people while we drank more tea. Some people had even made it as far as Wigan. Most of the participants were from the Hereford area though. Lunch was a hog roast which was delish! We’d decided after lunch that we’d force ourselves to try the relaxation tent. All in the name of research you understand!
There were lots of treatments available and all within the ticket price. Jacqui had an Indian head massage. Craig saw the effects and decided he’d have one too. I tried sound therapy and reflexology. The relaxation tent was put on by a company called healing earth. The treatments can be booked privately at http://www.healingearth.net/
After saying our farewells we headed back to camp for the last night and then home in the morning. Sitting around the campfire that night we talked about the things we’d done. I’m glad I had the opportunity to do this and would urge other young people to check what the society has to offer. There are all sorts of events happening through the year.
Just because we have MS is not a reason to sit back and watch time fly. Even if your MS is progressing you should still fight to grab life and shake it by the horns. That way, you’ll have as much fun as we did!
